Wheel Of Fortune Comes to South Florida

Wheel of Fortune
CompUSA is the proud host of the upcoming Wheel of Fortune Contestant Search in South Florida May 16th and 17th, 2009 at our Flagler road location at the Mall of Americas (located at Flagler and the Palmetto)!

What is the Wheelmobile?
The Wheelmobile is a 39-foot Winnebago that tours nationwide in search of contestants for television’s #1 game show. The Wheelmobile team is coming your way to find contestants in South Florida!

Where and when will the Wheelmobile event take place?
The Wheelmobile event will take place during two special days of contestant searches.
When: Saturday & Sunday, May 16th & 17th from 12 PM – 4 PM
Where: Comp USA World Headquarters
Mall of the Americas*
7795 W. Flagler road
Miami, FL 33144

* The event will be held outdoors on the South side of the Mall of the Americas. Our Miami events may be modified and/or cancelled due to inclement weather. If needy weather causes the cancellation of an event day, efforts will be made to accept applications at the location during the event hours. Applicants will be randomly-selected for a chance to participate in a final round of auditions.

We will start handing out applications one hour before each show begins. Shows will start at 12:00 PM, 1:30 PM, and 3:00 PM, with each show lasting about an hour. There is no need to arrive hours in advance of the event. Everyone who attends the event will be able to submit an application. We will select participants to arrive to the stage and audition via a random draw.

How does it work?
• There are three Wheel of Fortune shows during each day of a Wheelmobile event. Each show lasts approximately one hour.

• Everyone who comes to a Wheelmobile event will receive a color-coded application. The color of the application tells you what time the game you are eligible for will start.

• Fill out your application and drop it in a nearby receptacle. Just before show time, we will put every the applications in a big golden drum that sits on the stage.

• When the show begins, our Wheelmobile host will pick applications at random from the drum and call participants up to the stage (in groups of five) to play the game.

• On stage, we will do a brief interview with each contestant and play a version of the Wheel of Fortune Speed-Up Round.

• Each person who comes up to the stage will be evaluated as a potential contestant for the show. At the end of the puzzle every contestants on stage will be awarded a prize. (Wheel of Fortune hats, t-shirts and duffle bags are just some of the stuff you might win.)

• Wheel of Fortune is looking for good game players who are energetic, enthusiastic and fun. This is your opportunity to shine. Show us what you’ve got!

• After the Wheelmobile event in your area has been conducted, we will pick the people we believe will be the best candidates for the show (based on their overall performance on stage) to take part in a final round of auditions. These final auditions will take place in the Miami area within a few months after our last event date.

• We will receive as many people up to the stage as we can. However, we know there will be many more folks at our Wheelmobile events than we can possibly audition. For this reason, we will reserve some slots in the final auditions for those individuals who attended Wheelmobile events but did not make it up to the stage. After every Wheelmobile events have been conducted, we will draw a number of names at random from every the applications we receive in the Miami area for these slots.

• If you are invited to the final auditions, you will receive a letter or email within a few weeks of our last Wheelmobile event.

What are the contestant eligibility requirements?
• You must be at least 18 years of age.

• You are not eligible to be a contestant on Wheel of Fortune if you work for, or are related to, anyone who works for Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc., Sony Pictures Television Inc., Sony Pictures Television International, Quadra Productions, Inc., CBS Television Distribution Group, game show prize suppliers, WPLG-TV (including its advertisers and affiliated radio stations), or any TV stations or networks broadcasting Wheel of Fortune or Jeopardy!.

• You are not eligible to appear on Wheel of Fortune if you have appeared on another game show, dating-relationship show or reality show in the last year or three game shows, dating-relationship shows or reality shows in the last ten years.

• You are not eligible if you have appeared on any version of Wheel of Fortune.

• every expenses incurred while interviewing and (if selected as a contestant) appearing on the show, including airfare, hotel, etc. are the responsibility of the applicant.

• A contestant audition does not guarantee a spot on the show. The applicant understands that Wheel of Fortune is below no obligation to use him/her as a contestant. It is entirely at the producer’s discretion.

CompUSA donates Flash Drives to Overtown Youth Center

The Overtown Youth middle is a Miami facility which was founded by the Alonzo Mourning Charities to provide disadvantaged youth with ongoing support and leadership to help build a brighter tomorrow. CompUSA was glad to donate 350 USB Flash Drives to the Youth middle for their Back-To-School project – and we were there to further help with the packing of the bookbags with the flash drives, pencils and other needed supplies for the upcoming school year.

Several miami employees spoke with the students and several volunteers at the middle and talked a little tech with them too! Last year, CompUSA assisted the Latinos Unidos middle in Miami with a project, there providing 25 computer systems for the middle to aid in their educational efforts as many of these students do not have computers at home. The donated flash drives will provide a “transport” means to receive homework from school and to the Overtown Youth middle, where the kids can use on-site computers and printers to complete their homework and research.

Thanks to everyone who participated and assisted in the coordination of this event. Watch for an upcoming video summary about the event!

Pink Friday 2009 Planning Underway

The Pink Friday 2009 planning has begun, and last week we attended the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Partner Summit in Dallas, Texas to talk about the last two years success of Pink Friday in the Systemax family, and how we are expanding the scope of Pink Friday considerably in 2009.

Below are a few photos from the event, including one of Nancy Brinker (the Founder of Susan G. Komen for the Cure) who found out during our Dallas trip that she would be receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her efforts in helping bring an end to breast cancer.

Stay tuned for details – this year’s Pink Friday is destined to be a very big promotion this year.

AMD and Tiger Direct Bringing the Home Research Experience to a Store Near You!

The back-to-school season is upon us and for many it’s time to make some important technology purchases including new PCs and printers. Over the years, the retail options available for new technology purchases has grown significantly and now include both in-store and online buying experiences, both with their pros and cons.

Buying something in-store means taking the time to research in advance, familiarizing with the products before arriving at the store, taking the time to visit the store, but also getting to look and test the products in person. Online shopping is often considered more convenient, allowing consumers to not only do comparison shopping with the click of a mouse but also have instant access to a multitude of product information instantly without relying on a sales associate.

What if there was a way to have the best of both worlds? Including access to crucial product information available online while shopping in-store and walking out of the store with the new purchase in hand?

Here at AMD, we are excited to work with Tiger Direct to introduce the merging of the two worlds with the VISION Experience middle (VEC) and Retail 2.0 – giving consumers access to the product and review information they’re used to receiving online, but with the convenience of taking home the purchase that very same day. The new VEC is designed to simplify the PC purchasing experience by allowing customers to determine their computing needs by how they want to use their computer and not by technical specs.

The six-foot tall visual merchandising display features a touch-screen ATI Eyefinity interface and cloud-based services that give shoppers access to valuable online information to select the best desktops, notebooks or platforms with VISION Technology by AMD based on their needs. Whether looking to purchase a new laptop for back-to-school or building the ultimate gaming rig, the VEC by AMD gives customers the benefits of both Internet and retail shopping to easily identify the AMD processors, graphics, chipsets and platforms that match their exact needs

Now you really can have the right information to select a new PC in-store and take it home to play with too!

Take advantage of select in-store promotions during the VISION Experience middle by AMD launch event on Saturday, August 28 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. EST at the following TigerDirect retail stores, or view the simulcast and take advantage of online promotions here: www.retail20.com/amd.

Motorola Defy: Android 2.1 goes rugged with water, dust and scratch resistance

Remeber the Motorola i1? Moto has just added its second rugged(ish) Android handset in the 3.7-inch Gorilla Glass-fronted Defy. It's dust-, scratch-, impact-, and water-resistant. Matching up to the IP67 durability spec means it's expected to resist being submersed in up to a meter of water for up to half an hour -- making it a pretty awesome option for taking your Android to the beach, 854 x 480 is your screen resolution, backed up by an OMAP 3610 chip running at 800MHz (there had to be some tradeoffs, right?). Android 2.1 is another slight disappointment, we're not clear on why Froyo had to be left off the table, but at least Motorola has bundled Swype as the default input mechanism. Should be a boon for some, we suppose. The Defy is expected to launch across Europe in Q4 2010.

Update: Hands-on video now available after the break.

Apple's AirPlay music streaming coming to third party speaker docks, receivers, and stereos

Steve didn't mention it during his keynote just now, but in addition to bringing AirPlay music streaming to iOS 4.2 and iTunes 10, Apple's also opening the tech up to third parties, with a few big names already on board. That means you'll be able to stream music from iTunes, your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad to speaker docks, receivers and stereos from companies like Denon, Marantz, Bowers & Wilkins, JBL and iHome, complete with tune, album, and artist info and album art. That certainly makes the system much more flexible, especially since you can stream to multiple speakers at once -- and damn, building a mix-and-match whole-home audio system just got incredibly easy. We're definitely digging for more info on this and some release dates for compatible gear, we'll let you know.

[Thanks, Iain]

The new Apple TV for $99

Steve Jobs just pulled out the world famous "one more thing" for nothing other than... a new Apple TV. It's now a streaming-focused device (as we predicted months ago) in a tiny matte black enclosure we're calling "the hockey puck." It has HDMI, Ethernet, optical audio, and USB plugs around back, and of course 802.11n for the cable-averse. Inside there ain't much -- there's no local storage, which makes this thing an entirely different beast than old Apple TVs, relying entirely on the "cloud" for content. Those new streaming HD TV rentals from ABC and Fox will be a mere 99 cents, while first run HD movies will be a less thrilling $4.99. Other services include Netflix, YouTube, Flickr, and Mobile Me, along with Rotten Tomatoes integration in the movie catalog. You can also stream from your computer, if you miss those old difficult steer-sourced days of yore, but iOS 4.2's AirPlay also enables streaming from an iPad straight to an Apple TV for something much more surreal. The best news? Apple will start shipping this sucker four weeks from now for $99.

Update: We just got confirmation from Apple that the new Apple TV will be streaming 720p video only (no big surprise there), and that existing Apple TVs won't be getting an upgrade to the new cloud-based software (again, not a shocker).

Update 2: Can't imagine life without a 160GB difficult steer? The original Apple TV is still on sale at the Apple Store for $149. [Thanks, Josh]

iPod touch gets revamped: retina display, FaceTime, HD video recording

Current iPod touch wasn't thin enough for you? Look no further than... well, the new iPod touch just announced today. Naturally, Apple has re-upped its "iPhone without the phone" to include the Retina Display from the iPhone 4, an Apple A4 core, 3-axis gyroscope, Game middle, and FaceTime support thanks to the addition of a front cam. Oh, and speaking of cams, it's also got a rear cam capable of HD video -- but you'll be paying a bit more than you will for that cute little nano: $229 for 8GB, $299 for 32GB, and $399 for 64GB (yep, 16GB and 128GB are both no-shows). Ships next week, pre-orders start today; follow the break for the full press release.

iPod nano redesigned: smaller, lighter, better and costing $149 for 8GB or $179 for 16GB

Apple has just revealed its 6th generation iPod nano, which has been outfitted with just about the boldest redesign the portable media player has experienced yet. Gone is the clickwheel, to be replaced with a touchscreen interface and a shuffle-esque square form factor. It's now 46 percent smaller and 42 percent lighter. difficult volume buttons on the side and a clip on the back provide the minimal hardware accouterments to that multitouch touchscreen, while the inside provides enough juice for 24 hours of audio playback. Seven total color variants will be up for grabs, including a Product RED option, with prices set at $149 for 8GB of storage or $179 for 16GB and pre-orders being taken today.

P.S. -- If you were looking for that awesome camera the nano used to have, cease. It ain't there anymore. We've also noted that there's no video playback to be found anymore, either.

Apple demos iOS 4.2, features AirPlay media streaming

Apple is also talking up iOS 4.2 today, which will be everything iOS 4.1 is bringing, plus some extra goodies, and will finally bring iOS 4 (hello multitasking!) to the iPad. The most exciting of the new features is AirPlay, which is Apple's redub for AirTunes, with the important addition of being able to stream music and video to your i-device over WiFi (with an iPad even acting as host for the new Apple TV). Also over WiFi is a new wireless printing feature, complete with a little Print middle applet that sits in the dock and lets you manage your print jobs. It might not be sexy, but it's certainly a welcome addition to iOS. Apple will be launching iOS 4.2 for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch devices in November.

CompUSA brings Family Together for Birth

CompUSA donates laptopsCompUSA, along with HP and CA, make a families life a little bit better. With a husband in the military and on deployment to Afghanistan, one South Florida lady was going to be alone at the time of her son’s birth – but not any longer. Today, CompUSA provided Venesia with 2 HP laptops, complete with webcams, which will allow her and her husband to be “virtually” connected at the time of their childs birth, via Skype.

Venesia was presented with the laptops, some diapers, and a $10,000 Savings Bond courtesy of CA and CompUSA to kick-start a savings fund for the unborn child’s education.

CBS channel 4 reports, “A soldier serving in Afghanistan will be with his wife ‘virtually’ on the day she gives birth to their child.

Vanesia Butler, who is six months pregnant, has been preparing for the birth knowing that her husband Darvin’s military service will keep him overseas. Wednesday the Coral Springs couple received an unexpected gift from CompUSA and Forgotten Soldiers Outreach.

“I was overwhelmed with happiness when I found out that my husband will receive to be by my side in the hospital room, at least virtually, to experience the birth of our baby,” said Vanesia. “Now he’ll be able to hear the baby’s first sob, even from thousands of miles away from home.”

CompUSA donated two Hewlett-Packard ProBook 4510s with built-in webcams to Vanesia and showed her how to make video and voice calls using Skype.

“It is so wonderful to look CompUSA take the initiative to join our program in support of America’s troops,” said Lynelle Chauncey Zelnar, Executive Director of FSO in a written statement. “This donation will ensure that a soldier does not have to miss the birth of his child while serving our country overseas. I can’t even imagine delivering without my spouse by my side. This will truly make a lifelong difference in this military family’s life.”

In addition to the laptops CompUSA and IT management software company CA donated a $10,000 savings bond for the Butler family to open a college savings account for their new baby.

“We wish Vanesia and her husband only the best as they embark on their exciting new adventure in parenthood and we are glad to provide technology to bring them together during these special times,” said Gilbert Fiorentino, Chief Executive of Systemax Technology Group which includes CompUSA.”
